An Outstanding Ofsted Report For Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre In London

Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre (The NCS) recently received a full inspection by Ofsted, the office for standards in education. We’re delighted to share the news that at the end of the inspection period we were judged to be an ‘Outstanding’ education provider in all categories, with no areas for improvement detailed in the report.

Alongside our value-added ALPS 1 score, the high praise from the Good Schools Guide, the incredible results and expert elite university preparation; this further cements Newham Collegiate Sixth Form’s position as one of the best sixth forms in London and the UK for student outcomes.

This outcome is a testament to the hard-working expert teachers, leadership and support staff at The NCS who go above and beyond not only in providing an outstanding A-Level education but also in supporting and guiding students into their future careers. It’s also a celebration of our ‘holistic’ approach to A-Level education which recognises that long term success requires more than just exceptional A level grades and a university education  Our focus on our students’ personal development was rightly recognised in the Ofsted report with inspectors especially impressed with how the NCS supports all students fulfil their potential

This is all summed up succinctly by the Ofsted inspection team who visited us:

“Learners at Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre benefit from studying in an environment dedicated to academic excellence.”

When commenting about our students and the way in which our expert teachers inspire them to learn beyond the expected syllabus, Ofsted noted:

"Learners enjoy the challenge of meeting the high expectations set for them by their teachers. They benefit from their teachers’ high levels of subject expertise which allows them to learn, not only the content of their A-level syllabus, but also knowledge beyond that required for their examinations.”

They also noted the quality and success of our Elite University Preparation Programme for destinations ranging from the Ivy League, Oxbridge, Russell Group, all the way through to prestigious apprenticeship schemes:

"Learners benefit from leaders' expertise in preparing them to make successful applications to the most competitive universities and apprenticeship pathways.”

On the benefits of our Super Curriculum and preparation for university and high-level future careers:

"[Learners] enjoy attending additional sessions in which they have the opportunity to study undergraduate level content, and develop their skills in independent enquiry, critical thinking and debate. Consequently, learners are well-prepared for their future studies.”

A final key area singled out by the inspection team is our constant work on critical thinking, which is an essential component of our holistic approach to A-Level education.

"Learners appreciate the opportunity to engage with current issues and to develop their skills in proposing, debating and critical thinking.”
On the outcomes of our full inspection, Newham Collegiate Principal Mouhssin Ismail said:

“Achieving Ofsted’s gold standard category of ‘Outstanding’ is difficult in normal times, but when the inspectorate have set the bar even higher with a more rigorous inspection framework and you factor in the challenges of COVID19 it is an even more remarkable achievement and one that everyone should be immensely proud of.

“The teachers at the NCS are supremely talented and are experts in delivering high quality academic learning and it was pleasing to see that Ofsted recognising this is in the report.  I also must congratulate the talented students, both past and present, who have embraced the opportunities we have provided them with and who work incredibly hard to achieve the stellar results we enjoy year on year.”

– Mouhssin Ismail, Principal Newham Collegiate Sixth Form Centre (The NCS)

Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector, Amanda Spielman, wrote to Newham Collegiate to congratulate us on being the first to gain an Outstanding judgement since Ofsted returned to the full routine inspections after the pandemic. She said:

“This is a tremendous achievement by you and your team. Not only does the inspection framework set a high bar for being judged outstanding, but you have achieved this in the context of all the disruption caused by COVID-19. I hope that you and your whole school community are very proud.”

Amanda Spielman, Her Majesty’s Chief Inspector
