Why I Joined The NCS?

I am excited by the challenge of creating an academically high achieving and innovative Sixth Form Centre that students in Newham will aspire to be part of. At the moment many of the most gifted students in Newham go outside the borough for their post 16 education which is a loss to the local community.

The NCS will focus on delivering traditional A Levels and an extracurricular programme that provides opportunities for personal and social development that will prepare young people in Newham with the knowledge, skills and experiences to join Russell group universities or internships within high status professions and companies.

Why I Joined The NCS?

When I first viewed The NCS website, I could see that the Sixth Form provided an exceptional post 16 education for its students.  When I made my first visit I found that not only was the Sixth Form building magnificent, the students were motivated, encouraged by staff and had high aspirations, confirming my initial thoughts. The staff have a wealth of experience and have created a curriculum that results in students achieving both excellent A-level grades and having the skills to excel at university and in the work place, something few Sixth Forms do effectively. I am looking forward to using the superb facilities in the science department in order to develop students’ practical skills and theoretical chemical knowledge, alongside The NCS super curriculum,  so that they become the next generation of ground-breaking scientists.

Ms Sardar – Year Leader / Teacher of Chemistry

Why I Joined The NCS?
“The mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be ignited.” ~ Plutarch. This is a favorite quote that has stood true to me for the last 12 years of my teaching career. It incorporates enthusiastic, reflective teaching and independent learning. Why I chose The NCS? It’s simple; to work as part of an outstanding team and help ignite the minds of our future generation. I believe every young person has the capacity to learn the appropriate skills with the right teaching and nurture. The challenge for teachers of all subjects is to make the subject interesting and accessible to young minds; one aspect of teaching that excites me is experimenting with different strategies to motivate and engage students.

I have a thirst for teaching and helping my students achieve; as Henry Brooks Adams said, “A teacher effects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops” and I am looking forward to being part of that ripple effect in our community at The NCS.

Message to Future NCS Students
Dear students:

There really isn’t a more exciting time to be studying physics than now! You are embarking on a quest to help us find the ultimate physical laws of nature. This is of great importance for understanding our own place in the universe as well as finding future technologies that will be vital for the survival of all the species living on our planet.

Recent technological advances have allowed us to find predicted particles such as the Higgs boson (the particle responsible to give all known particles their mass) as well as gravitational waves, which were impossible to detect just a few years ago. Such advances have also allowed us to measure the impact that the human race has had on climate change on our planet and the possible solutions needed in order to tackle this increasing threat to our way of life. We need young and enthusiastic students like you to help us find solutions to these problems, without mentioning the increasing need to help us find the answers to some of the most important and profound questions in physics that so far remain unanswered. For example:

Where do we all come from?

Does the universe have a beginning and if so, will it have an end?

Where did life in the planet come from?

Is there life in other planets either inside or outside our solar system (or even our galaxy)?

What is the nature of reality according to the laws of quantum physics?

At the NCS, we will work hard to give you the necessary tools to put you on the right path to help us find answers to some of these questions.

Welcome to the wonderful world of physics!

Why I Joined The NCS?

As a maths teacher, I am passionate about teaching students how to develop their critical thinking when facing maths problems. Challenges should not be feared, but considered as exciting opportunities to learn and widen the horizon of our knowledge and logical thinking. The study of maths helps to develop a wide set of skills that are highly transferable in several other disciplines and important in our daily life. With that focus in mind, my aim is that of creating an environment where students can express their full potential as mathematicians and thinkers.

Here at NCS, I am excited to work as part of an outstanding team of teachers, who have very high expectations for their students and strongly believe in their ability to excel academically. My aim is to contribute to building the foundations that will sustain our students in their academic pathway and future careers, as well as throughout their lives.

Why I Joined The NCS?

As a maths teacher, I am passionate about teaching students how to develop their critical thinking when facing maths problems. Challenges should not be feared, but considered as exciting opportunities to learn and widen the horizon of our knowledge and logical thinking. With that focus in mind, my aim is that of creating an environment where students can express their full potential as mathematicians and thinkers.

Here at NCS, I am excited to work as part of an outstanding team of teachers, who have very high expectations for their students and strongly believe in their ability to excel academically. This was my favourite aspect of The NCS as a student and it still is now, which is why I chose to teach here.

You should spend time on it and think more. Ask teachers and peers. Remember, the question gives you a chance to learn from it. Challenge yourself. If you can solve a problem generally, you completely understand the method to solve it.

Although A level Examinations are not easy, enjoy all the ways you are learning. You will definitely find it worthy in your life.

Why I Joined The NCS?

During my final year of University at UCL, I volunteered as an Academic Mentor at the NCS. Mr Bullman – Teacher of Psychology

BSc (Hons) Psychology – University of Bristol

Why I Joined The NCS?

The NCS ticks all the right boxes: it is academic, it is somewhere that hard work is rewarded, and it is somewhere that all students are given the opportunity to build an amazing, high-flying future. A strong work ethic is actively and strategically nurtured from day 1 here, and the staff body is made up of incredible individuals who work wonderfully as a team.

Most of my career has required me to split my attention between leading a science department, teaching biology, chemistry and physics across KS3 and 4, and teaching KS5 Psychology. It has been a pleasure to work with such a variety of students in different contexts, but I’m ready now to focus on the most profoundly interesting subject – psychology – at a higher level, with the some of the most driven students around.

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) Psychology – University of Bristol
  • PGCE Secondary Science – Canterbury Christ Church University

Previous school & Role

I trained as a science teacher and quickly took an opportunity to teach psychology at the same time. My most recent role was at Ark Isaac Newton Academy as Head of Science and Teacher of Science and Psychology.

Prior to training as a teacher, I worked in two very challenging mental health settings: one working with adults with profound learning difficulties and developmental conditions, and another with individuals who had been through the criminal/forensic justice system, but with complex mental health conditions including schizophrenia, bipolar depression, and personality disorder. As a psychology teacher now, I’m always so grateful for these years of experience, and that I can share these with my students to convey the impacts and challenges of mental health conditions for the sufferers and those around them.

Experience of teaching KS5

I have been teaching KS5 Psychology for 7 years, across various specifications. I also taught A-level Biology for a period.

Message to Future NCS Students

The NCS is such a special place – make the most of you time here. You will have to work very hard, but know that you will grow tremendously through your efforts, and you will be supported all the way. The opportunities you are given at the NCS are phenomenal, so take as many as you can and you will both broaden your horizons and become equipped to succeed in whichever path you choose.

I also joined the NCS because teaching PRE to a predominantly religious cohort is a really rewarding and exciting experience – we have incredible discussions in class and my students always have such thought-provoking perspectives. The students also set themselves the highest goals and are incredibly hard working – and I wanted to work at a school were the students routinely impressed me by their excellence. I also knew how incredible the NCS’ teachers were, and I wanted to work in an environment surrounded by excellence and dedication, so that I can become the best teacher I can be.

PRE is a fascinating subject which is very useful for students interested in a broad range of careers, including medicine, law, finance, banking, the civil service, and a whole host more. It complements STEM and Humanities subjects equally.
