For the first time in our history, we are proud to announce that Newham Collegiate Sixth Form (The NCS) has won the prestigious Sheriffs Challenge public speaking competition, after previously finishing as runners-up. This incredible achievement marks a significant milestone for our students and showcases their talent, dedication, and commitment to excellence.
What is the Sheriffs Challenge?
The Sheriffs Challenge is a prestigious public speaking competition organised by the Sheriff of London. It invites schools across the capital to participate, with each team sponsored by a livery company from the City of London. This year, our students were supported by our Chair of Governors, Peter Green.
Participants must deliver a presentation in response to a set question, demonstrating teamwork, creativity, analytical rigour, and fluency. The NCS has a strong track record in the competition, having reached the final twice before—but this year, our team went a step further and secured the ultimate victory.
The Road to Victory
Our winning team consisted of Nabeeha Haque, Iffat Bhuiyan, Noor Zaggut, Zareena Raynor, Adeyinka Adeniyi-Ayibiowu, and Rifah Alam. They were tasked with answering the thought-provoking question: “Which ‘doors’ would you like the City of London to help open to improve your educational and career opportunities?”
The team impressed in the initial round, outperforming four other schools to secure a place in the final. The grand event was held at the Old Bailey, one of the most prestigious and historic legal venues in the UK.
Winning at the Old Bailey
In the final, our students presented in the famous Court No. 2 at the Old Bailey in front of an esteemed panel, including two high court judges and the Sheriffs of London. Our team’s outstanding performance secured them the Sheriffs Challenge trophy for the first time in NCS history.
The judges were particularly impressed by their innovative approach. Rather than simply discussing ‘opening doors,’ they proposed that the City of London should provide ‘keys’ to young people, empowering them with the tools and opportunities needed to succeed. Their presentation took the form of a Newsnight programme, delivered with exceptional confidence and flair.
Dedication and Hard Work
Behind this success was months of preparation. Our students dedicated their lunchtimes, evenings, weekends, and even parts of their half-term break to refining their speech, conducting research, and rehearsing their delivery. Their commitment and perseverance highlight the exceptional standards of NCS students and demonstrate that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
