Dr C. Philippeos Delivers Lecture – A Day In The Life Of A Cell Biologist

NCS Lecture Programme
Lecture Date: 12/01/2016

On Tuesday 12th January 2016, Dr Christina Philippeos visited NCS Biology students to talk about her career as a cell biologist.

Dr Philippeos grew up in South Africa. She completed her BSc and then a Masters working on developing a vaccine for HIV. She moved to the UK in 2008 and worked as a hepatocyte scientist in the Institute of Liver Studies at King’s College Hospital. Her role involved isolating liver cells from donated organs that were then used for cell transplantation. She also helped develop a technique to ‘hide’ these cells from the immune systems of the recipients, so that the cells could be given to new born babies with acute liver disease, without having to give them anti-rejection drugs.

Christina completed her PhD in Cell Biology at King’s College London, where she studied the effects of insulin on endothelial cells. She is currently working with stem cells in the skin, developing a cell therapy for wound healing and scarring.
